A WONDERFUL YEAR FOR SCULPTURE

Spring in the Northern Rivers of NSW signals the arrival in Ballina of a 'flock', 'gathering', 'assemblage' or is it 'colony' of new works of art arriving in the gardens and rainforest at Thursday Plantation's Pacific Highway headquarters. This is the sixth year of the Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show, and it promises to be an exceptional year.

The 55 selected artists include sculptors from all over NSW and from Queensland, ACT and Victoria and even one from Western Australia. Local artists include such well-known luminaries and previous prize-winners as Daniel Clemmett, Samantha Collyer, John Dahlsen, Robert Gibson, Allen Horstmanshof, Christina Khumari, Suvira McDonald, Stephen Exton Peryman and Deborah Tinker. They will be in the running for the $10,000 Thursday Plantation Acquisition Award, the $1000 Ballina RSL People's Choice Prize and the TEN Television Acquisition Award (to $1000) - and competition will be hot!

"It's always an adventure to see the final shape of the exhibition unfold as all the works arrive and we give them the site that suits them best," says Priya Woolston, the show's curator. "There are 72 innovative and remarkable works coming - the excitement is definitely mounting as we get into top gear for the week-long installation process."

This year the performing arts program which accompanies the show has some favourites from the past and some innovations too. Opening Day, Sunday 16 September, noon to 5pm features a garden party with a musical soundscape from fine Northern Rivers performers and the Awards Ceremony at 3pm. On Saturday 6 October, 4 to 6.30pm, we are hosting a launch for 'Music Mosaic - The Pulse of Global Harmony', a new music label from Mullumbimby, with an inspiring concert show-casing world and new age music performers.

Thursday Plantation's annual Homecoming event is called 'Homecoming 2001 - Under the Stars' and invites you to celebrate with one of Australia's premiere award-winning artists, Daryl Braithwaite and his band: the date for your diary is Saturday 27 October.

Sunday 11 November sees the return of the highly successful A Cappella festival 'Singing in the Rainforest' with 8 wonderful vocal groups - 100 performers - from Bellingen to Brisbane, and the Rockinghorse Recording Studio Ensemble Competition. The acclaimed children's circus from Mullumbimby 'Spaghetti Circus' performs their latest show 'Bugs' in two special daytime schools performances on 22 and 23 November, with an evening performance for the general public on Friday 23 November.

" The experience of viewing over 100 good works of art at one time in a beautiful outdoor setting builds to give the viewer an extraordinary artistic experience which is unique in regional Australia" says Christopher Dean, Chairman of Thursday Plantation.

The Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show opens on Sunday 16 September and runs until January 31 2002 at Thursday Plantation, Pacific Highway, 1k north of the Ballina Airport turn off.

The exhibition, the Education Centre and Verandah Café are open 7 days a week, 9to5.
