Christina Khumari: The People's Choice

Christina Khumari: The People's ChoiceAfter two months of voting, the Ballina RSL People's Choice Award in the Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show has resulted in a fine winner - Byron Bay artist Christina Khumari for her delicate sculpture 'Caught'. It's a giant web of wire and glass beads suspended high above the rainforest path in the gardens at Thursday Plantation's Ballina headquarters, with a beautifully crafted silver leaf caught in the strands.

" I'm so pleased with this award; it's a real validation for me as my work is expanding from jewellery into sculpture," said Khumari. She was inspired to make this work by watching a leaf suspended by an invisible spider's thread dancing in the breeze at Thursday Plantation.

She wins a prize purse of $1000 sponsored by the Ballina RSL. Club President, Bob Grant, is delighted with the choice. "We are very happy to support this prize, which gives every visitor to this wonderful exhibition a way of being involved and expressing an opinion," he said. Ballina RSL is currently developing an exhibition area for artists to show their work in Ballina.

The Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show runs until January 31 2002 at Thursday Plantation, Pacific Highway, 1km north of the Ballina Airport turnoff. The organisers gratefully acknowledge the support of the Government of NSW through the Regional Flagship Events Program of Tourism NSW. The exhibition, the Education Centre and Verandah Café are open 7 days a week, 9am to 5pm.
