MEDIA RELEASE:

11th Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show, BALLINA NSW 24 September 2006 - 31 January 2007

The premier sculpture showcase of the Northern Rivers region enters its second decade with an exciting influx of entries by both established artists and gifted young creators. One of the first of its kind in Australia, the Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show has fostered the development of many artists and the public’s appreciation of sculpture, and continues to be strongly sponsored by WHK Rutherfords Financial Advisers.

This year’s summer-long event features around 65 new works from 60 East Coast artists, a number of whom are first-time participants.

The outdoor exhibition is held in the rainforest and botanical gardens of Thursday Plantation, the site of Australia’s pioneering tea-tree-oil company located just 20 minutes south of Byron Bay and 1 km north of the Ballina/Byron airport turn-off.

As well as the annual show, the Thursday Plantation Sculpture Park hosts a permanent sculpture collection and a gallery of sculptural works for sale that can be viewed all year round. Each year the collection is augmented with award-winning acquisitions from the show.

Curator Priya Woolston is enthusiastic about the diversity of this year’s entries. “Such a broad spectrum of styles and materials reflects a refreshing inventiveness on the part of our artists. Alongside a strong contingent of emerging talent, we are pleased once again to show works by established regional sculptors such as Suvira McDonald, Melissa Hirsch, Daniel Clemmett and Allen Horstmanshof.

“It is always inspiring to see how artists relate their ideas to the outdoor environment, bringing home to us their passion for the need to live more harmoniously with nature.”

The Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show will open on Sunday 24 September with a garden party and awards ceremony. An added attraction will be the creation of a large-scale community work that can be viewed from a hot air balloon - more details shortly.

Thursday Plantation is open seven days a week, from 9am - 5pm, and refreshments and natural-health products can be purchased at the Visitors’ Centre.
