Music Inspired by Art at Sculpture Show

Yantra de Vilder and Friends entertain at the 11th Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show Opening Day, 12 noon- 5pm, Sunday, 24 September 2006

Composer and performer Yantra de Vilder is creating a musical score designed specifically to reflect the ambience of the sculptures and landscape of Thursday Plantation. She will be playing grand piano and will be joined by vocalist Leigh Carriage and percussionist Greg Sheehan

A graduate in Contemporary Music from Lismore’s Southern Cross University, and recently completing a Masters degree in Composition at Macquarie University, Yantra has spent the last seven years working on exciting music projects around the world. Now with advancements in digital technology she has decided to return to the North Coast, where she works from Labyrinth Studios, the new production company she has established in Byron Bay.

“I have a passion to collaborate with and support the thriving local arts community, whether on projects of local or international significance,” says Yantra. “We have a wealth of talented film makers, musicians and artists in this area - there is no better place in the world to be working.”

Yantra specialises in creating soundtracks for film, television and radio. She is currently composing the music for a 30-part BBC World series entitled “Thabyegone Ywa.” This is a truly international project with the production team based in Australia, Thailand and London. The series is being broadcast to 13 million people across Burma.

Yantra is also working on projects closer to home. She is composing the music for the ABC documentary, “Rainforest” with local film makers David Warth and Michael Balson, and has recently completed the soundtrack for the David Bradbury film about the nuclear industry, “Blowin’ in the Wind”.

Over the years Yantra has built up a vast library of natural sounds, which she and the team at Labyrinth Studios are using to make a series of “Film Surroundscapes”. These multi-media works combine spectacular wide-screen footage of the Australian wilderness with original music and surround-sound mixes.

Yantra is also a seasoned live performer of her own compositions. The Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Festival Centre and Melbourne’s Universal Theatre have all been graced with her original music.

The upcoming concert at Thursday Plantation is a homecoming of sorts as she originally performed at the 1st Thursday Plantation Sculpture Awards, 11 years ago.
