MEDIA RELEASE:

Pillars of Society and Paper Aeroplanes Win at
Thursday Plantation Sculpture Show

Two provocative and playful works are this year’s joint winners at the East Coast Sculpture Show at Thursday Plantation in Ballina. ‘Artemis - Pillars of Society’ has won for its creator, Victoria Royds of Toowoomba Qld.: it is a witty tribute to the nurturing role of women in our society. Daniel Clemmett of Clunes, a perennial exhibitor at Thursday Plantation, has won for ‘Stealth Bonnets 7’, playing with persistent modern trash and transforming solid car bodies into light paper planes.

In a very strong show that had the judges, Jude McBean of Grafton, Sebastian di Mauro of Brisbane and Donna Marcus from the Gold Coast in a lively debate, other winners were Ken Johnson of Brooklet for ‘Euclicon’, winner of the Regional Artist’s Award, Lynne Adams of Main Arm for ‘Tulips’, winner of the TAFE Arts Prize, and Dev Lengjel of Mullumbimby for the Crystal Castle Ephemeral Art Prize for ‘Thumbprints’, an interactive work that had everyone leaving their mark at Thursday Plantation.

The curator, Priya Woolston, says “I’m so happy that our last show at Thursday Plantation is so rich in diversity, humour, thoughtfulness and a commitment by our artists to outdoor art. Since our beginnings in 1996 we have exhibited many memorable works and I’m especially pleased that so many of the winners are artists from our region.”

The 12th Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show continues every day, 7 days a week, until January 31 2008 at Thursday Plantation, Pacific Highway, Ballina NSW, 20 minutes south of Byron Bay and 1km north of the Ballina/Byron airport turnoff. The show is open on weekdays from 9-5, and weekends and public holidays from 10 –4. Admission is by suggested donation of $5, which includes a free catalogue, and refreshments are available from the Verandah Café.
